Walk into any small-to-mid-sized Indonesian residential construction project — a family home being built in a Bandung suburb, a small ruko renovation in Surabaya, a bedroom addition in a Yogyakarta housing complex — and observe how information moves. Almost every meaningful piece of communication runs through WhatsApp.
The homeowner messages the kontraktor about a change to a bathroom fixture. The kontraktor forwards the message with a voice-note commentary to the mandor (site foreman) supervising the daily work. The mandor forwards it, with photographs of what's already installed, to the tukang (tradesperson) actually doing the work.
